Guilford Poets Guild Welcomes Connecticut Poets Laureate

Murder, Gaggle, Convoy, Flock – what does one call a gathering of poets? Perhaps you’ll find out at the Guilford Poets Guild’s Second Thursday Poetry Series on October 12, when we welcome six of Connecticut’s Poets Laureate for a special evening of poetry. The event, presented by the Guild and the Guilford Free Library, will be held on Thursday, October 12 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the library. It begins with an Open Mic from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m., and follows with readings from these Poets Laureate:

  • Susan Allison, Middletown, founder of the Buttonwood Tree Performance Arts & Cultural Center
  • Tarn Granucci, Wallingford, community leader and businessman
  • Joan Hofmann, Canton, Professor Emeritus, Education, University of Saint Joseph,
  • Patricia O’Brien, Old Saybrook, retired social worker, art museum docent
  • Laurel Peterson, Norwalk, English professor at Norwalk Community College
  • Gordy Whiteman, Guilford, president of the Guilford Poets Guild

All six poets are members of the Connecticut Coalition of Poets Laureate (CCPL), a group of state and local poets laureate in Connecticut. The mission of the CCPL is to promote the enjoyment of poetry and be a resource for communities. The coalition assists with the appointment of local poets laureate and supports the efforts of these individuals.

There will be books for sale at the event, and refreshments will be served. Remember to bring your own poem to share during the Open Mic which is open to accomplished and aspiring poets of all ages wishing to present one original composition to a live audience.

Upcoming Second Thursday Poetry Series events presented by the Guilford Poets Guild and the Guilford Free Library include Alan Garry, the Connecticut Veteran Poet Laureate on November 8; and a Holiday Roundtable on December 14 featuring Found Poems.

The Guilford Free Library is located at 67 Park Street in Guilford. This program is free and open to all. Please register by phone, in person, or online (203) 453-8282, guilfordfreelibrary.org.
