Allan Garry, Poet Laureate of the Veterans Art Foundation, to Read November 9

The Guilford Poets Guild is honored to welcome Allan Garry, Poet Laureate of the Veterans Art Foundation, to its Second Thursday Poetry Series on November 9. The event, presented by the Guild and the Guilford Free Library, will be held from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the library. It begins with an Open Mic from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m., and follows with Garry’s presentation.

Alan Garry started writing poetry over 35 years ago. After a brief measure of success, he stopped writing for the next 20 plus years. He has the dedicated professionals at the West Haven, VA Connecticut Healthcare to thank for his decision to begin writing again. His work has been published in Red Fox Review, The Penny Paper, Helix, Connecticut Review, Connecticut River Review, Avocet, Theater Topics, Main Street Rag, The Cape Rock, Cumberland River Review and the recently published anthology, Laureates of Connecticut – An Anthology of Contemporary Poetry. As the winner of the Wesleyan Honors College Connecticut Poetry Circuit Competition, he has read his work at Yale University, Trinity College, Connecticut College and many other Connecticut colleges and universities. His play, Gathering Shells, co-written with Crystal Brian, the theater director of Quinnipiac University, has been produced at the Long Wharf Theater and The Little Theater in New Haven, as well as the Abingdon Theater in New York City.

The mission of the Veteran Arts Foundation is to heal through the arts. Garry came to his role as Poet Laureate of the Veterans Art Foundation originally as a disabled veteran. Through the years, he has conducted poetry workshops for veterans participating in in-patient programs and read his work at various art shows sponsored by the VA. His poetry was featured throughout the run of The Body of an American, a play recently produced at Hartford Stage.

There will be books for sale at the event, and refreshments will be served. Remember to bring your own poem to share during the Open Mic which is open to accomplished and aspiring poets of all ages wishing to present one original composition to a live audience.

The final 2017 Second Thursday Poetry Series presented by the Guilford Poets Guild will be held on December 14, a Holiday Roundtable featuring Found Poems. For more information, visit
